Sports Saturday

Let's play a humorous little game of good news/bad news....

  • The good news is that I thought of a really good idea.
  • The bad news is that I was drinking whiskey when I thought of it, and actually just stole it from someone else.
  • The good news is that Stacy thought of it, one of our most legitimate athletes.
  • The bad news is that she was drinking, too, I think, when she thought of it.
  • The good news is that TomC is dead-set against it.
  • The bad news is that it might take away from his constantly varied fitness routine.
  • The good news is that it will round you out as an athlete.
  • The bad news is that you might get sore in ways that CF doesn't prepare you.
  • The good news is that it won't conflict with any scheduled group classes.
  • The bad news is that there really is no bad news.

So here's the idea:  one Saturday a month, after the morning classes are done with, we're going to play a sport.  It's totally optional, of course, but you'll be missing out if you don't participate.  Nothing too serious, just a little coaching on some of the basic skills of the game, and if there is enough time and enough bodies, a friendly little game afterward.

I first started thinking about this concept over Thanksgiving weekend when I got invited to play in an indoor soccer match.  Our team was totally outgunned (our team lost 10-3...ouch!) but I managed to do well enough and there were a few bright spots.  But most of all, it was just really fun to get out of the gym and apply some of the skills we work to develop through training.

We'll call it Sports Saturday, and the first Sports Saturday session will happen on Saturday, January 30th.  We have a host of subject-matter experts to choose from:  Stacy can show us how to ride a bike, Tamara can coach us through the basics of volleyball, Christine can get us out there on the water with actual rowing boats, I can teach you all how to play tennis, and I'm sure there are many others out there who can pitch in.

The time and sport of choice for this month will be featured in another post as we get closer to Jan 30th.

Post your sport of choice to comments for future Sports Saturdays.

enough said.

Can you play two hand touch rugby?  If not, I'm out.  Yes, I'm afraid.

We could play tennis at my club.  And then drink whiskey sours and sit in the jacuzzi.

How about paint ball?  Is that a sport?  Shooting people sounds fun.

How about indoor sports?

Sweet! Candace is going to teach us about the sport of bench warming.

Does this mean that Tami and I can finally dominate Mikey and Brandon in a game of basketball?

Never even watched a Rugby match but would love to try it!

Will do Basketball...How about a fight club?

put your pull-ups to good use! field trip to santa cruz...

I think it's a great idea. Ultimate Frisbee anyone? I'm happy to play coach, assuming I can get away from the girls (or bring them along).

I'd also be up for rugby, although I'm sure Brandon doesn't want to risk getting hurt. Something about violating his contract.

We use our legs so much why not kick some goals in?

Leka- I am in!! surf trip to santa cruz.....

Whoa, whoa whoa ... did someone mention kickball?

This sounds like a fun idea, made even better by the drinking.   I would second the vote for rugby and would note that there are variations which do not involve blood shed.  Our season is starting now, but would be interested in participating in whatever sport(s) are decided.

Speaking of rugby, the team that Sam, Colin and I play on starts its regular season this weekend.  We play pretty much every Saturday afternoon, with home games on Treasure Island.  When the weather is good, it's a good time to replenish some of the missing Vitamin D and drink a beer (or two).  If anyone is interested in watching or perhaps playing (we are always looking for new players), let me know.

Rugby. How else can you play with two hookers and not get arrested for soliciting?

What about parkour?

Practical shooting. You run through a course and along the way you shoot at targets from various positions. You get scored on time as well as accuracy.

1. This blog rules. Now my brain can expand with my biceps.

2. I second drunken kickball. If we have to play it sober count me out

3. Love this overall idea, stand up paddleboarding, kayaking, more track workouts, parkour, rowing, biking (mtn and road) are all things I would definitely be down with.

4. Pacific trail runs puts on some great local train runs/races.

Unrelated feedback. Cutting out the 6:00 class on Tuesday and Thursdays is a bummer.

Forget this contest.  Innovate, make it CF, own the latest competition for fitness freaks  Milk? Sweet Potatoes?  Those little chia pets Connie likes to eat?

Yes, Tami, pimpin' is a sport and, no, it ain't easy. I like that Connie eats chia pets. That's cool. I would like to vote for croquet. It would provide the physicality that rugby certainly lacks. Lastly, milk for the f*cking win.

We should be swimming. 'Nuff said. If you don't know how, I can teach you. Just don't ask me about flip-turns. I hate them. We could try water polo, but I found I wasn't cutthroat enough for that, so someone else will have to lead. Still, there's nothing like pool relays.

... to displace the 6pm crew 2 nights a week.  However, please note that the 7pm has been reinstated to Tues/Thurs as an alternative.

Yes to sports 'cuz I need more humiliation in my life.

All sound fun to me but I'll participate in anything except Rugby- this is America after all and we play football here, and I'm not talking about futbol! Boom!

Nothing like a Saturday afternoon bowling tournament.

David I am interested in coming to see. Let me knoe sched and location.

Thanks

also drunkin kickball sounds perfect....just make second base a bucket.

>The bad news is that you might get sore in ways that CF doesn't prepare you.

No way. I thought CrossFit was supposed to prepare me for anything. What is all this suffering for if not to make me dominate all but professional players in any sport I happen to try, with no unpleasant after-effects. Are you saying that is not going to happen for me?

flag football or two hand touch

I totally want to come to watch a rugby game at treasure island - I've needed an excuse to go there for so long and now I have one.

David S. - can you post the schedule, but mostly when you guys will play at treasure island?

Also, how about capture the flag? Or is that just a country-in-the-woods kinda game - either way, it was the game we played in high school.

Whoo hoo! I m ready to quit cycling just to play all these sports with all you fools! This is rad.

Also I would be happy to run a playground games day. we could play 4square, tetherball, 3 flags, double dutch, hopscotch,  dodge ball ... what ever you wish you could have won at when you were ten.

and crazy relays! in the pool or on the grass.

I think we should include the various cfo kids on the teams! its good for them and will hopefully keep the uber competitive types from potentially bludegoning each other.

Im also happy to lead an Mtb ride too! we have some great trails real nearby. Joaquin miller park would be a great place for a game of capture the flag! could be a two for one day.

take that tom! ;)

Thanks for the interest everyone.  Our team (Berkeley RFC) have home games at Treasure Island on the following days:

January 9
February 6, 20
March 6, 20

Games start at 1:00 pm and are played here:  tinyurl.com/yhxrhyr

Thanks in advance for your support!

Sierra I think swimming would be a great idea although I am not a good swimmer.  Audra is an excellent swimmer so I would recruit her for my relay team.  However, I can't promise that she won't ditch us all for the kiddie pool to look for a new boyfriend.  ****Boom****  Yes, that just happened :)

i thought  crossfit  was the sport of fitness.

if not, i nominate drunken practical shooting.

omigoodness....I want to play dodge ball so so so badly

If there is interest, we could put together some action-flex (basically nerf sticks/swords) fights. It might seem a little Renaissance Fair but it's a lot of fun. I've got all the gear.

I would love to see a Serge / P-Hole rematch with something less lethal than a bar bell.

:)

jp

JP, have you been watching Role Models one too many times???

Why do you have all the gear? I just want to see you in the gear, can you wear it next time you come in to do a WOD?

By gear I mean protective gear, not capes and crowns. Although I think it would be fun if someone wore a crown so I could watch it go flying off after hitting them in the face with an action-flex.

D-sall I think you listed all the away games

Yes, I misread the schedule.  In any event, we do have 2 games this weekend at Treasure Island starting at 1:00, for those interested.  I will post correct schedule in one of the forums.

yes maria, that is most definitely a country-in-the-woods kinda game, but im down for playing it on-the-streets-in-the-hood!

stacy: id love to go mtb riding- gotta hustle up a bike...

and jp, you definitely need to sport  all that gear to the gym!

What do you think I'm wearing underneath my Adidas stertch-pants and Minus-One Mini shirt? I'll tell you: CHAINMAIL.

JP, are you also wearing a cape underneath? Capes are super hot. Really. Any girl who doesn't find capes, swords, and pointy crowns on a guy hot, is crazy in the head.

Please wear it tomorrow when I come in.

Leka, I guess it's obvious we are from the country with capture the flag games. Montgomery Woods in the fog with a bunch of 17 year-olds covered in mud is where it's at.

I also like 17 year-olds covered in mud...
